Jim and Herberta Uzzle Annual Scholarship
The Jim and Herberta Uzzle Scholarship was established by their children and grandchildren so that their commitment to education could continue to support others in their educational journey.
Jim and Herberta met as students at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and both began their teaching careers after graduation in 1931. They taught in several places before moving to Wilson’s Mills in 1945, where they remained. Together they spent over 60 years in school classrooms. Herberta taught all levels of English in Wilson’s Mills School until it closed and was Librarian for Smithfield Junior High School when she retired. Jim was Principal for Wilson’s Mills School where he also taught high school math and coached baseball and basketball. When he retired, he was Principal at Benson Elementary School. At one time there were 15 other family members teaching students. All four of their children were involved in educational professions.
The Uzzles were active community leaders. They spent countless hours with programs of the Wilson’s Mills Christian Church and other organizations. They were involved at the community, county and state levels, receiving recognitions from many of them.
Former students continue to share gratitude and memories of the two people who taught, supported, encouraged, and stood by them during their school experiences and later as the adults they became.
Jim and Herberta would be cheering on the recipient of this scholarship. CONGRATULATIONS!
